A bright and playful life was tragically cut short on July 29, 2025, when 13-year-old Aymira Thomas, a Black female, was fatally shot inside her family's apartment at the Ridgeline at Canton apartment complex in Canton, Michigan. Remembered by her sister as confident, kind, and goofy, Aymira's sudden death sent shockwaves through her family and the local community. The day had been ordinary until a 911 call at 12:24 p.m. reported a shooting.
Police and emergency responders arrived within minutes and performed life-saving measures, but Aymira succumbed to her injuries at the scene.
In the immediate aftermath, authorities took a person of interest into custody, assuring the public that there was no ongoing threat. That individual was soon identified as Aymira's older brother, 23-year-old Jay-Veon McKinney. Investigators revealed that the shooting was not an act of malice, but the result of alleged recklessness. According to the prosecutor's office, video evidence showed McKinney playing with two pistols about an hour before the fatal incident. His 'grossly negligent' handling of a loaded firearm in the presence of his two younger sisters led to one of the guns discharging, striking Aymira in the chest.
Jay-Veon McKinney was subsequently charged with Homicide—Involuntary Manslaughter, Felony Firearm, and Careless Causing Death. During his arraignment, a plea of not guilty was entered on his behalf. The judge set a significant bond, initially a $500,000 cash bond, to be followed by home confinement with a GPS tether under a $500,000 personal bond. As part of his bond conditions, he was barred from possessing any firearms. The court scheduled a probable cause conference for August 14 and a preliminary examination for August 22, marking the next steps in the legal proceedings following the preventable tragedy that took a young girl's life.
