Torrance Statham, a 51-year-old male, was shot and killed on May 17, 2025, near the Garnett Street MARTA station in Atlanta, Georgia. He was found with a single gunshot wound to the chest and was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have suggested that Statham may have been experiencing homelessness at the time of his death.
The investigation into Statham's death led police to 25-year-old Melvin Marshall.
Video surveillance from the area showed that a conversation took place between Statham and the assailant before the shooting, leading investigators to believe the attack was not a random act. A breakthrough in the case came when a witness in an unrelated domestic violence incident informed DeKalb County officers that Marshall had 'killed someone in the city a few days ago.'
Following this lead, Atlanta police detectives gathered enough evidence to charge Marshall in connection with Statham's murder. Within minutes of identifying him as the suspect, law enforcement located and arrested Marshall in DeKalb County. He was taken into custody and booked into the Fulton County Jail. Marshall faces multiple charges, including murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He also had outstanding misdemeanor warrants from a domestic incident that occurred in February. While a definitive motive for the shooting has not been released, Marshall did not cooperate with police to provide one.
