Naomi Nalani Hagerman, 44, was last seen in Weaverville, California, on March 1, 2001, although some sources state the date as March 11, 2001. At the time of her disappearance, Hagerman was experiencing homelessness and lived on a remote property off Wildwood Road with her boyfriend, James Lee Jespersen, and a friend, Todd Andrew Swallows. Due to her transient lifestyle and involvement with drugs, her family did not immediately report her missing.
Concerns for Hagerman's welfare grew after her family heard about a fire at the property where she was living. Upon investigation, they discovered that two trailers and Hagerman's pickup truck had been destroyed by fire, but there was no sign of human remains. The case took a more sinister turn when, a month after Hagerman's disappearance, Todd Andrew Swallows' body was discovered in the Trinity River in Junction City, California. An autopsy revealed that Swallows had been murdered, with the cause of death being blunt force trauma to the head.
Law enforcement located Hagerman's boyfriend, James Lee Jespersen, in Alaska and questioned him about both Hagerman's disappearance and Swallows' murder. While he was charged in Alaska with being a felon in possession of a firearm, he was never charged in connection with either of the California cases. No one has ever been charged in the murder of Todd Andrew Swallows or the disappearance of Naomi Nalani Hagerman.
