In the early hours of June 15, 2025, the life of 19-year-old Israel 'Izzy' Mays, a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short in Evansville, Indiana. A large party in the 300 block of Taylor Avenue had just begun to break up around 12:30 a.m., with attendees spilling into the street. It was in this chaotic scene that gunfire suddenly erupted, causing panic and sending partygoers scrambling for safety.
Multiple 911 calls flooded into emergency services as more than one
individual reportedly opened fire into the crowd. When police arrived, they discovered a scene of mayhem with several victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Mays was among the injured and was rushed to Ascension St. Vincent Hospital, but he ultimately succumbed to his wounds. The Vanderburgh County Coroner's office later publicly identified him as the sole fatality from the shooting.
The violence of the night was not limited to the gunfire. Amid the frantic escape from the scene, at least one person was struck by a vehicle. This led to the arrest of 21-year-old Alexis Wilhite, who was charged with leaving the scene of an accident causing injury. However, law enforcement officials have emphasized that the investigation into the shooting itself remains active and ongoing. Detectives believe that multiple shooters were involved and have appealed to the public for any videos or firsthand accounts that could help them piece together the events of that fatal night. As of the initial reports, no suspects in the shooting had been taken into custody.
