In the early hours of Monday, July 21, 2025, the city of Topeka, Kansas, was rattled by a burst of violence that would ultimately claim the life of 33-year-old Gerald Avery, a Black male. The incident unfolded around 2:15 a.m. in the 4500 block of Southwest Topeka Boulevard, a typically busy thoroughfare that was quiet at that hour.
