On a summer evening in Hammond, Indiana, the life of a 16-year-old male, Michael J. Reyna, was tragically cut short. On Wednesday, July 16, 2025, at approximately 7:25 p.m., police responded to a report of a shooting in the 1000 block of 177th Street. Upon arrival, they found that Michael had been shot.
He was rushed to Community Hospital in Munster in critical condition but ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The Lake County Coroner's Office subsequently ruled his death a homicide.
Known as 'Mikey' to his friends, he was a student at Morton High School and had previously attended Scott Middle School. He was a passionate basketball player who dreamed of one day playing in the NBA.
Hammond Police detectives are actively investigating the shooting. At this time, no information about a suspect or suspects has been released to the public, and no arrests have been made in connection with the case.
