In the summer of 2025, the life of 8-year-old Kylen Khole Powell, a young male from Bainbridge, Georgia, was tragically cut short. On the night of Friday, July 11th, while at his grandmother's house on Vada Road, Kylen was shot and killed. The person responsible was his 13-year-old cousin. When Decatur County deputies arrived at the residence around 11:40 p.m., they found young Kylen unresponsive.
In the days that followed, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in to assist with the death investigation. Their findings led to the arrest of two family members on July 15, 2025. The 13-year-old cousin was taken into custody and charged with felony murder and aggravated assault. He was subsequently booked into the Decatur County Youth Detention Center. The boys' grandmother, 49-year-old Knisha Ann Perkins, was also arrested and faced charges of three counts of second-degree cruelty to children and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. She was booked into the Decatur County Jail.
The investigation revealed that no adults were present at the time of the shooting. Another child, a 1-year-old, was also in the home but was unharmed. Authorities reported that the investigation was ongoing and, upon completion, the case would be turned over to the South Georgia Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office for review. At the time of the initial reports, no information had been released regarding what led to the shooting.
