Martin Crawford Stegall, a 45-year-old white male, served as the Sheriff of Decatur County, Georgia. On October 29, 1905, he tragically lost his life in Bainbridge, GA. Sheriff Stegall was attempting to arrest a suspect for the murder of a woman on Broad Street when he was fatally shot. The suspect, identified as Augustus Goodman, turned and shot Sheriff Stegall three times at close range, striking him in the liver, stomach, and right lung.
