In the early morning hours of August 3, 2025, a dispute that began inside Matey's Bar and Restaurant in Michigan City, Indiana, spilled out into the street, ending in the tragic death of 25-year-old Dante Sellers of La Porte. As Sellers was walking to his vehicle parked across the street from the establishment, gunfire erupted. Police responded to multiple 911 calls just after 2:30 a.m. reporting fights and shots fired outside the bar.
They discovered Sellers in a parking lot entrance with a gunshot wound. Emergency medical services transported him first to Franciscan Hospital and then to the University of Chicago Hospital for advanced care, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the shooting was swift, and within days, authorities identified 27-year-old Cevin Crawford as a suspect. He was arrested on August 5, 2025, and subsequently charged with one count of felony murder. For a time, it seemed the case was on a clear path to resolution. However, the trajectory of the investigation took a sharp turn later that month. New video evidence emerged from a different angle which, when slowed down, revealed that another individual had fired the fatal shot. This discovery led to the dismissal of the murder charge against Crawford.
The case did not remain cold for long. Continued investigation by detectives led to a significant breakthrough in November. Based on a collection of further evidence and witness interviews, police identified a new suspect. On November 6, 2025, 35-year-old Daquvay Sherrod of Michigan City was arrested by a SWAT team and charged with murder in connection with Sellers' death. In another twist, the investigation brought authorities back to the initial suspect. On November 14, 2025, Cevin Crawford was arrested again, this time on a charge of Aiding, Inducing or Causing Murder after additional evidence was presented. Both men were held on a $1,000,000 cash bond.
