In the early morning hours of July 12, 2025, the life of 20-year-old Jordan Rose, a male from Michigan City, Indiana, was tragically cut short. The night had been volatile, with police dispersing a large and unruly crowd of around 400 people from Pullman Park and later from the Grace Street area. Following these dispersals, a significant number of people, including Jordan Rose, congregated at a BP gas station on East Michigan Boulevard.
It was at this gas station that a fatal encounter
unfolded. Surveillance video from the location showed Rose approaching a group of individuals near a black GMC. An exchange occurred, culminating in a man punching Rose. The two, along with another individual, moved out of the camera's view. Witnesses reported hearing a gunshot shortly after. Rose was discovered on the ground with a gunshot wound to his chest. First responders provided immediate medical aid before he was rushed to Franciscan Health, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 2:28 a.m.
The investigation into the homicide led police to identify 25-year-old Quashawn Jenkins of Michigan City as the suspect. According to witness accounts, an argument over a gun in Rose's possession preceded the shooting. Rose's girlfriend, who was present at the scene, told investigators that he was licensed to carry his firearm that night. After hearing the gunshot, she turned to see Jenkins pointing a gun at Rose as he held his side. Another witness stated that after Jenkins punched Rose, Rose's gun fell to the ground, and Jenkins picked it up before the shot was fired. In the immediate aftermath, some witnesses reported that Jenkins claimed Rose had shot himself.
On July 27, 2025, acting on a tip, officers with the Michigan City Police Department located and arrested Quashawn Jenkins. The arrest was made without incident after police utilized the Flock Safety camera system to find the vehicle Jenkins was in. Following a review of the investigation, the La Porte County Prosecutor's Office formally charged Jenkins with murder, felony murder, and robbery. He was booked into the La Porte County Jail with a bond set at $1,000,000. A trial date was subsequently set for December 1, 2025.
