In the quiet, early morning hours of August 15, 2025, the residential streets of Indianapolis's northeast side were disturbed by the sound of gunfire. Responding to these reports, officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department arrived at the 8400 block of Meadowlark Drive, near the intersection of East 42nd Street and North Franklin Road, around 1:30 a.m. There, on the edge of the roadway, they discovered the body of 25-year-old Paul Vincent Thompson III, a Black male.
He had been shot and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators began the arduous task of piecing together the events that led to the young man's death. Neighbors reported hearing a car speeding away from the area immediately after the gunshots, suggesting a swift departure by the perpetrator or perpetrators. Crime scene investigators recovered shell casings from the street, further evidence of the violent encounter. The Marion County Coroner's Office later officially identified the victim as Paul Vincent Thompson III. An IMPD spokesperson noted that this type of violent crime was considered unusual for that particular neighborhood.
As the investigation continues, authorities have not yet publicly identified any suspects or made any arrests in connection with the homicide. Detectives are actively canvassing the area for potential witnesses and have urged residents to come forward with any doorbell camera footage that may have captured something relevant around the time of the shooting. The motive for the killing remains undetermined. Police have asked anyone with information to contact the IMPD Homicide Office or to leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana.
