On July 30, 2025, 64-year-old Richard Hawk was driving north along Interstate 85 in Troup County when deputies were dispatched around 4:02 p.m. to what first looked like a crash near the 11-mile marker. They found his vehicle in the median and the driver, identified as 64-year-old Richard Hawk, unresponsive and bleeding. He was rushed to Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center, where doctors discovered he had been shot in the head and he later died.
