Saturday evening, Suniga was at home preparing for bed when a friend called for his help. The friend was hosting a party that had quickly spiraled out of control with the arrival of numerous uninvited guests. Persuaded by his friend's repeated pleas to help disperse the crowd, Suniga went to the house in the 18900 block of East Crestridge Circle. A neighbor recounted how the gathering swelled rapidly from a small group to over a hundred people in less than half an hour. In the ensuing chaos, multiple shots were fired from different firearms.
When Arapahoe County Sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene just before midnight, they found Suniga lying in the driveway with gunshot wounds to his chest. Despite their life-saving efforts and those of a neighbor who administered CPR, paramedics pronounced him deceased at the scene. The coroner later confirmed his death was a homicide caused by his injuries. The aftermath of the shooting left the quiet residential street littered with shell casings of various calibers, and at least two vehicles and one house were damaged by the gunfire.
The investigation into the shooting led to the arrest of a 17-year-old male suspect on a charge of first-degree murder. However, law enforcement officials believe at least one other individual was involved. The Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office is actively searching for another teenage suspect, described as a 17-or-18-year-old male, approximately 5'10' to 6' tall, with a heavy build of around 220 pounds and blonde hair. Suniga's grieving family has pleaded with the outstanding suspect to surrender to the authorities, remembering their son as a beautiful life taken senselessly while trying to help a friend in need.
