In the late hours of a Sunday night in Birmingham, Alabama, a verbal dispute tragically escalated, cutting short the life of 31-year-old Literrance Leon Bratton, a Black male. The fatal encounter unfolded in the Ensley neighborhood, specifically in the 2700 block of 30th Street. Just before midnight, the argument turned violent when gunfire erupted.
A Birmingham police officer who was nearby heard the shots and witnessed two individuals attempting to flee the scene in a vehicle.
The officer immediately initiated a pursuit, which concluded near Aaron Aronov Drive and Valley Road in Fairfield. One of the occupants of the vehicle was taken into custody without incident. Following the shooting, Bratton was rushed to UAB Hospital for medical attention.
Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Literrance Leon Bratton succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 1:08 a.m. on Monday, May 19, 2025. The suspect who was apprehended is being held at the Birmingham City Jail on a 48-hour felony extension as detectives continue their investigation. Authorities have not yet publicly released the identity of the individual taken into custody.
