In a heart-wrenching incident in Phoenix, Arizona, five-year-old Layla Ramos lost her life in what has been described as a tragic accident. On the evening of June 3, 2025, Layla was at her father's home near 7th Avenue and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard when the unthinkable happened. Her nine-year-old brother discovered their father's rifle and accidentally shot his younger sister.
The girl's father, 33-year-old Irvin Ramos-Jimenez, was outside the home when he heard the gunshot.
Rushing inside, he found his daughter wounded. In a state of panic, he initially reported to police that his daughter had been stabbed. He then attempted to rush her to a nearby behavioral hospital for medical attention. However, upon seeing an ambulance at the facility, he reportedly fled the scene, realizing he had left other children at home with the unsecured firearm. Layla was eventually transported to a trauma center, but tragically, she succumbed to her injuries.
Following the incident, Irvin Ramos-Jimenez was arrested and faced charges of possessing a weapon as a prohibited person, as he is a convicted felon. Prosecutors emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that this was not a simple case of a felon possessing a firearm but a case where an assault rifle was irresponsibly stored in a child's bedroom. Despite the prosecution's objections and their request for a significant bond, Ramos-Jimenez was released on his own recognizance with the condition that he has no contact with any witnesses, including his relatives.
Layla's family has been left devastated by the loss of the young girl, who was eagerly looking forward to starting school. Her mother, Dolores Ramirez, described her daughter as having a 'gentlest soul' and filling their world with love and light. Layla's uncle, Jose Ramos, remembered his niece as their 'little princess, who received her wings far too soon.'
