On the night of Friday, August 22, 2025, the life of 35-year-old Emmanuel Loya was tragically cut short in a fatal shooting on the south side of Tucson, Arizona. Around 9:15 p.m., officers from the Tucson Police Department were dispatched to the 5200 block of South Champion Stravenue after receiving reports of gunfire in the area. Shortly thereafter, a call came in from St.
Mary's Hospital, informing the police that a man with a gunshot wound had been brought to their facility by a private vehicle. That man was identified as Emmanuel Loya. Despite the medical staff's efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Homicide detectives were called in to take over the investigation. They began their work by processing the scene on South Champion Stravenue, searching for evidence and canvassing the neighborhood for any potential witnesses who might have seen or heard something that could lead to a suspect. At the same time, another team of investigators was at the hospital, trying to gather information about the car that had dropped off Loya. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, the police had not yet identified any suspects and the motive for the killing was unclear. An appeal was made to the public for any information that could help move the case forward.
Less than two weeks later, a breakthrough was made in the investigation. On Tuesday, September 2, 2025, the Tucson Police Department arrested 35-year-old Jose Enrique Cureses in connection with the murder of Emmanuel Loya. Cureses was subsequently booked into the Pima County jail. He is facing charges of first-degree murder and armed robbery. A judge set his bond at $1 million. Following this tragic and senseless act of violence, friends and family of Emmanuel Loya were left to grieve their profound loss, remembering him as a beloved son, brother, and friend. A fundraiser was initiated to help his family with the unexpected financial burden of funeral and memorial expenses.
