Roberto Simmon, 34, a Hispanic/Latino man, was shot and killed late on the night of June 12, 2008, at an apartment complex in eastern Las Vegas. Police were called to 1060 Sierra Vista Avenue at about 10:52 p.m., where Simmon was found mortally wounded; the coroner later identified him as the victim and determined he died from a gunshot wound to the neck.
According to contemporaneous reports, the shooter was an on-site security guard working at the complex.
Metro police said the investigation was ongoing and did not name the guard or the company that employed him. A trade association’s summary of local TV coverage in the days that followed reported that the guard told detectives Simmon reached for the guard’s firearm during the confrontation.
At the time, authorities emphasized that the case remained under investigation and that no charges had been filed. Public reporting in the weeks and years that followed contains no notice of an arrest connected to Simmon’s death, and police and coroner communications from that period do not reflect any prosecution stemming from the shooting.
