On the final night of 2017, what began as a festive New Year's Eve for 26-year-old Richie Gaudio turned into a tragedy that would eventually be linked to a violent, cross-country crime spree. Gaudio, a male resident of Las Vegas, was in his driveway on the 4800 block of Chantilly Avenue, setting off fireworks to ring in the new year. The celebratory atmosphere was shattered when a vehicle pulled up and an occupant opened fire, striking Gaudio multiple times in a drive-by shooting.
He was rushed to University Medical Center but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The initial investigation into Gaudio's death left police with few leads, and for a time, no arrests were made. However, his case was not an isolated incident. A string of violent crimes had been plaguing the Las Vegas Valley, and investigators began to see a pattern. Gaudio's murder was eventually connected to nine other homicides in the area, all believed to be the work of the notorious transnational criminal gang, MS-13. This revelation transformed the investigation into a massive federal and local law enforcement effort to dismantle the gang's local operations.
In March 2018, a major breakthrough occurred when authorities arrested five alleged members of the MS-13's "Parkview clique." While those initial arrests were on a variety of charges, the investigation continued to build a larger case. In August 2021, a federal grand jury returned a superseding indictment against four members of the gang, formally charging them in connection with ten murders, including that of Richie Gaudio. The indictment named Luis Reynaldo "Molesto" Reyes-Castillo, David Arturo "Herbi" Perez-Manchame, Joel "Mumia" Vargas-Escobar, and Alexander De Jesus Figueroa-Torres as the individuals responsible for the year-long reign of terror. The charges against them included murder in aid of racketeering and various weapons offenses, bringing a measure of justice to the families of the victims of their violent spree.
