On a rainy evening in Mobile County, Alabama, on October 16, 1976, 23-year-old Cheryl Lynn Payton was working as a clerk at a Compact convenience store. That night, she was abducted at gunpoint from her place of work. Signs of a struggle were later found at the deserted store, including an overturned Coke machine and a broken six-pack of sodas. Her husband had dropped her off at work earlier that afternoon, the last time he would see her alive.
