In the summer of 1982, in the city of Battle Creek, Michigan, a sense of unease settled over a quiet apartment complex. Twenty-year-old Margaret 'Maggie' Hume, a young woman known for her kind nature and as the daughter of a beloved local football coach, was found murdered in her home on August 16th. The grim discovery was made after she failed to show up for work, prompting her concerned brother and boyfriend to check on her. They entered her apartment to find it eerily silent, with her alarm clock still ringing and her glasses, which she heavily depended on, left behind. A search of the residence led to the heartbreaking discovery of Maggie's body concealed in her bedroom closet, wrapped in a blanket and a sleeping bag.
An autopsy would later reveal the brutal nature of her death; she had been sexually assaulted and strangled. The investigation into her murder quickly focused on two individuals. One was Maggie's boyfriend, Jay Carter, who had been with her for much of the night before her body was discovered.
