Holly Suzanne Tarr, an 18-year-old White female from Okemos, Michigan, was tragically murdered on April 3, 1990, while visiting her brother in San Diego, California. Holly, an honors student and aspiring actress, had traveled to California for spring break. She was staying at the Buena Vista Gardens apartment complex in the Clairemont neighborhood, an area that had already seen two other young women brutally stabbed to death earlier that year.
Holly had been swimming at the apartment complex pool shortly before she was attacked. Witnesses reported hearing a scream, and some saw a man fleeing the scene. A bloodstained butcher knife, believed to be the murder weapon, was later recovered in an alley behind the complex.
Authorities quickly recognized similarities between Holly's murder and the previous killings of Tiffany Schultz and Janene Marie Weinhold, both young White women who had been stabbed to death in the same neighborhood. The police began investigating the possibility of a serial killer. Holly Suzanne Tarr, like the other victims, suffered a fatal stab wound to the chest. Prince was charged with six murders, including that of Holly Suzanne Tarr, as well as multiple counts of burglary, rape, and attempted burglary. Witnesses placed him near the scene of Holly's murder, and investigators found evidence linking him to the crimes. Prince was convicted and sentenced to death. His appeal was denied in 2007, and he remains on death row at San Quentin State Prison.
