On the evening of November 13, 2016, a tragic incident unfolded in the City Heights neighborhood of San Diego, California, resulting in the death of 42-year-old Hispanic female Reyna Gonzalez. The violence erupted when her daughter's ex-husband, 22-year-old Juan Carlos Fernandez, arrived at the family's residence on Marlborough Avenue. Fernandez, who had a history of domestic violence and was subject to a restraining order filed in December 2015, confronted the family after learning his ex-wife
was in a new relationship.
During the confrontation, Fernandez retrieved a handgun from his vehicle and opened fire on the family. Reyna Gonzalez was fatally shot while shielding her 21-year-old daughter from the gunfire.
