On April 22, 1986, Eustaquio “Tico” Martinez, a male victim, was murdered by Manuel Pardo Jr., a former police officer turned serial killer. Martinez was among the nine individuals Pardo killed during a 92-day spree in South Florida. Pardo claimed his victims were drug dealers, asserting he was conducting a personal crusade against narcotics trafficking. However, authorities determined that some victims, including Martinez, were not involved in drug activities.
Pardo was apprehended after using credit cards stolen from his victims, which led investigators to connect him to the murders. During his trial in 1988, Pardo took the stand against his attorney's advice, admitting to the killings and stating he should be executed for his actions. He was convicted on nine counts of first-degree murder and sentenced to death.
After spending 24 years on death row, Pardo was executed by lethal injection on December 11, 2012, at Florida State Prison. In his final statement, he maintained that he had only killed drug dealers and denied harming any women, despite evidence to the contrary.
Martinez's murder was part of a series of calculated killings by Pardo, who meticulously documented his crimes in a diary and collected newspaper clippings about them. The case remains a stark reminder of the dangers posed by individuals who exploit positions of authority to commit heinous acts.
