On September 10, 1988, 78-year-old African American woman Mattie Mae McClendon was found dead in her home in Atlanta, Georgia. Her body was discovered lying on her bed, covered by a sheet. At first glance, there were no obvious signs of foul play, but an autopsy later revealed that she had been sexually assaulted and died from asphyxiation.
