Shaquana Deborah Jordan, a 30-year-old African American woman, tragically lost her life on February 5, 2025, in Portsmouth, Virginia. Known for her warm and compassionate nature, she had built a career in healthcare, earning certifications in pharmacy technology and continuing care assistance. Her dedication to others was evident in both her professional and personal life, where she was a cherished member of her community and a deeply loved mother, sister, and friend. At the time of her death, she was five weeks pregnant.
On the evening of her death, police received a distressing 911 call from her 7-year-old son, who reported that his father had shot his mother. Officers arrived at the Churchland Square Apartments to find Shaquana on the porch with gunshot wounds to her arm and side. She was transported to a local hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. Her two young sons, ages 2 and 7, were present in the home at the time of the incident.
The suspect in her death was identified as her husband, Hasheed Mills. Surveillance footage from the apartment complex reportedly captured an altercation between the couple shortly before the shooting. After the incident, Mills was seen fleeing the scene in his vehicle, leaving the two children unattended. Police later located and arrested Mills in Hampton. He has been charged with aggravated murder of a pregnant woman, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, shooting in the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a felon, and abuse and neglect of a child.
According to her sister, Shaquana had been trying to leave the relationship. Court records revealed a history of domestic violence, with prior charges against Mills for assault and battery. In a prior incident, he had allegedly threatened to kill her. The Portsmouth Commonwealth's Attorney's Office has stated their commitment to vigorously prosecuting the case.
