Jayden Greer was a 16-year-old Black/African American male whose life ended in gunfire at Dineen Park in Milwaukee on the afternoon of March 9, 2025. The shooting unfolded shortly after 4:15 p.m. at the north-side park, near Appleton Avenue and Capitol Drive and only a short distance from a playground. Milwaukee County sheriff’s deputies, detectives and other first responders rushed to the park after 911 calls reported shots fired.
Greer was found suffering from fatal gunshot wounds and died at the scene.
The scene investigators encountered suggested a significant burst of gunfire rather than an isolated shot. A witness reported hearing roughly 30 shots around the park’s basketball court, and shell casings were observed at the scene. Early information released during the rapidly developing investigation incorrectly described the person who died at the park as being 19 years old. The following day, the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office officially identified the victim as Jayden Greer and established his correct age.
Greer was not the only person killed in connection with the violence. Investigators said another person wounded during the same incident later appeared at a Milwaukee-area hospital with injuries that were considered non-life-threatening. Authorities also connected a second death to the shooting after Daequan Stevens was discovered several blocks away. Stevens was found dead in or near a vehicle after apparently suffering gunshot injuries during the Dineen Park incident. The medical examiner later identified him as 27-year-old Daequan Stevens.
The fact that the victims were located in different places initially complicated the picture of what had happened. Greer was found inside the park, the surviving wounded person reached a hospital separately, and Stevens was discovered away from the park. The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office nevertheless said investigators believed the shootings were connected and treated the deaths and the surviving victim’s injuries as part of the same incident. Authorities did not publicly explain what triggered the gunfire, whether the shooting grew out of a dispute, or whether more than one person fired a weapon.
The violence was particularly disturbing to residents because it happened in daylight in a public park used by families and children. Neighbors described seeing a large emergency response and expressed fear about returning to a place where children regularly played. Milwaukee County Supervisor Felesia Martin said afterward that the incident had shaken the surrounding community and that she was communicating with the sheriff’s office to learn more about what had occurred.
Despite the multiple victims and the substantial amount of gunfire reported at the scene, authorities did not immediately announce an arrest. News coverage following Greer’s identification specifically reported that no one had been arrested in connection with the shooting, while the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office continued investigating.
