In the spring of 2025, a young man's life was tragically cut short in Hampton, Virginia. Jayland DeShawn Kelley, a 21-year-old Black male known affectionately as 'Kaveman,' was fatally wounded in a shooting on the afternoon of April 15th. The incident occurred around 1:13 p.m. in the vicinity of Old Big Bethel Road and Topping Lane. When first responders arrived at the scene, they discovered Jayland suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound.
He was quickly transported to a local hospital for medical attention.
Despite the efforts of medical professionals, Jayland DeShawn Kelley succumbed to his injuries three days later, on April 18, 2025. Born on July 30, 2003, at the Portsmouth Navy Hospital, Jayland was a graduate of Bethel High School's Class of 2021. Those who knew him remember a young man with a bright mind and a loyal heart. He found joy in simple pleasures, often spending his free time playing video games while on FaceTime with his beloved brothers and nephews. His joking personality and charming smile left a lasting impression on his family and friends.
The Hampton Police Division launched an investigation into the homicide, seeking to bring those responsible for Jayland's death to justice. Their efforts led to the identification and arrest of three individuals. Izayah Jeanty, a 19-year-old from Hampton, was taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharging a firearm in public.
Two other Hampton residents were also arrested in connection with the case. Antonette Jefferson, an 18-year-old female, and Andrew Britt-Holley, a 20-year-old male, were both charged with being an accessory after the fact to murder. The investigation remains ongoing as the legal process for the three suspects proceeds. The community continues to mourn the loss of a young life full of promise, while the Kelley and Weston families navigate their profound grief.
