In a quiet Southwest Memphis neighborhood, the life of a beloved hairstylist and business owner came to a tragic end. On the afternoon of December 16, 2024, Ellen Buford Granberry, a 53-year-old African American woman, was found shot to death inside a gray Kia on Manson Road. Alongside her was her longtime friend, 54-year-old Sharon Wilson, who had also been fatally shot. The car was riddled with bullet holes, a grim testament to the violence that had unfolded.
Both women were pronounced dead at the scene, leaving a community in shock and mourning.
Granberry was a well-respected master hairstylist and the proud owner of the 'One In A Million Hair Salon.' Known for her vibrant personality and creative talents, she was a mother to three sons. Her death sent ripples through Memphis, where she had built a legacy within the beauty industry. Friends and family were left with countless questions as they grieved the sudden and violent loss of a woman they described as a cherished friend and dedicated professional.
The investigation into the double homicide quickly gained momentum. The break in the case came from an unlikely source: a separate investigation into a vehicle theft ring. While executing a search warrant at a residence on Grosvenor Avenue in connection with another homicide, Shelby County Sheriff's Office investigators uncovered a cache of stolen vehicles, drugs, and numerous firearms. Ballistics testing linked some of the recovered weapons to the murders of Granberry and Wilson.
This crucial evidence led to the arrests of two young men: 21-year-old Desmond Emery and 22-year-old Jonathan Rush. Both were subsequently charged with first-degree murder in the deaths of the two women. In addition to the murder charge, Rush also faced a charge of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. The arrests brought a small measure of relief to a grieving community, as the judicial process to hold the alleged perpetrators accountable began. The investigation, however, remained ongoing as authorities continued to piece together the events that led to the tragic deaths of Ellen Granberry and Sharon Wilson.
