In the early morning hours of a Tuesday in October 2016, 32-year-old Royces Givens, a dedicated FedEx employee, was fatally shot while sitting in her car at a Roma Mart gas station in South Memphis. Known to her friends and loved ones as 'Cici,' she was a hard worker with a good spirit. The incident, which marked the city's 182nd homicide of the year, occurred shortly before 4:00 a.m. at the gas station located at the intersection of East Mallory and South Lauderdale.
According to police reports, a man shot Givens and then fled the scene. The motive for the shooting was not immediately clear to investigators, who spent time collecting evidence and speaking with witnesses in the aftermath. Her coworkers at FedEx expressed their shock and grief, describing her as someone who kept to herself and was a diligent worker. The company also released a statement expressing their condolences and cooperation with the ongoing investigation.
A few days after the shooting, Memphis police made an arrest in the case. Authorities had issued a warrant for 21-year-old Christopher Williams, who was subsequently taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of Royces Givens.
