On the evening of May 30, 2024, a burst of gunfire shattered the peace near the Murray North TRAX Station in Salt Lake City, Utah, leading to the tragic death of 21-year-old Abdiaziz Abdirahman. The young man was struck multiple times in a drive-by shooting at the intersection of Fireclay Avenue and Birkhill Boulevard and was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. The incident, which unfolded around 7 p.m., also left three other individuals wounded.
Among the injured were a 14-year-old boy who was shot in the back and faced the possibility of paralysis, a 16-year-old who was shot in the hand, and a fourth person who sustained a minor shrapnel wound.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a 17-year-old male, Raoul Bedoang. Authorities identified him through surveillance footage and witness statements. The shooting was determined to be gang-related, with police indicating that Abdirahman and the other victims were members of the same street gang that had an ongoing conflict with a rival group. According to court documents, the chain of events leading to the shooting began when Bedoang was informed that a group of individuals was looking for him. He then arranged for a ride to find them, claiming he wanted to play basketball. However, upon locating the group, Bedoang rolled down the passenger window of the vehicle and fired approximately 18 shots at them before fleeing the scene.
Raoul Bedoang was subsequently arrested and charged as an adult with one count of murder and numerous other felonies, including multiple counts of discharging a firearm with serious bodily injury. In a later court appearance, the teenager, now 18, pleaded guilty to murder and a felony charge of discharge of a firearm as part of a plea deal. In his plea statement, Bedoang admitted to acting with a "depraved indifference to human life" when he fired into the group. As a result of the plea agreement, 17 other felony charges were dismissed. His sentencing was scheduled for October 29, with a recommended sentence of at least 20 years to life in prison.
