Ty’Marcus Jamir Newton, a 20-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life in a shooting incident that occurred in Rose Hill, North Carolina, on January 11, 2025. The incident took place at a birthday party, where an altercation escalated into gunfire. Duplin County 911 Communications received a distress call around 12:24 a.m., reporting the shooting. Law enforcement officers, including Duplin County Deputies and ECU Health Police, responded swiftly to the scene. Newton had sustained a single gunshot wound to the chest and was pronounced dead at the scene. Another victim, a female, suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the knee.
Following an investigation, authorities identified Khamani Morrisey as the suspect responsible for the shooting. Morrisey, who had been involved in a dispute at the party, allegedly discharged a firearm, striking both Newton and the female victim before fleeing the area. After several days, Morrisey turned himself in at the Duplin County Sheriff’s Office on January 14, 2025, at approximately 3:57 p.m. He was subsequently charged with one count of Felony Murder and one count of Felony Assault with a Deadly Weapon Inflicting Serious Injury. Morrisey is currently being held in the Duplin County Jail without bond.
Newton’s passing has deeply affected his community. His funeral service was scheduled for January 20, 2025, at James Kenan High School in Warsaw, North Carolina, with interment following at the Bowden Family Cemetery.
