On a Monday evening in Saint Matthews, South Carolina, a 34-year-old man named Jordan Dove from Lugoff set out to check on a family member's vacant house. He was accompanied by his daughter on this seemingly routine task on February 24, 2025. Unbeknownst to them, the quiet residence on Chickadee Circle concealed a deadly mechanism, a shotgun rigged to the back door as a booby trap. When Dove entered the home, the trap was triggered, and he sustained a fatal gunshot wound.
His daughter, who was with him, heard a sound like fireworks and tragically realized her father had been shot.
Emergency services were called to the scene, and Jordan Dove was transported to a local hospital, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. When Calhoun County Sheriff's deputies arrived, they quickly determined the shot had been fired from inside the house. Suspecting the home might be booby-trapped, they proceeded with caution, establishing a perimeter before making a slow and careful entry. Inside, they discovered the front door had been barricaded, and the shotgun was found rigged to the back door, set to discharge upon entry. Authorities were able to safely dismantle the device.
The investigation soon focused on the homeowner, Alfonzo Brown, who was identified as Jordan Dove's uncle. Brown was not present at the time of the incident as he was already incarcerated in Maryland on charges of attempted murder in a separate case. Law enforcement officials believe that Brown had set the booby trap with the intention of targeting them. They theorized that he anticipated they would track him to the Calhoun County residence and set the trap for when they executed a search warrant. As a result of the investigation into Dove's death, authorities announced that Alfonzo Brown would face charges in connection with the fatal shooting.
