On a winter evening in North Charleston, South Carolina, the lives of two young men were tragically cut short. Twenty-one-year-old Jasmond Grant and seventeen-year-old Damarion Champagne were discovered deceased on December 27, 2021, inside a burning apartment on Sumner Avenue. First responders, initially alerted to a shooting, arrived to find the residence engulfed in flames.
The Charleston County Coroner's Office later confirmed that both Grant and Champagne had sustained fatal gunshot
wounds. The investigation into the grim discovery quickly transitioned into a double homicide case. The North Charleston Police Department led the inquiry, piecing together the events that led to the two deaths and the subsequent arson, which authorities believe was an attempt to conceal the initial crime.
In the course of their investigation, law enforcement identified a suspect in the double homicide. Rashlean Richmond Washington became the focus of the police inquiry. Authorities issued active warrants for Washington's arrest on multiple charges, including two counts of murder, possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, and second-degree arson.
