Calliou Frazier, a 21-year-old Black man, died on August 25, 2023 in North Charleston, South Carolina, after a burst of gunfire shattered the late afternoon on Leslie Street in the Dorchester Village area.
Police were called to the street at about 4:30 p.m. for reports of shots fired tied to what was initially described as a possible robbery and home invasion. When officers arrived, they found three people had been shot; two were dead and a third was wounded.
Investigators said there was no immediate evidence that anything had been taken from the home, and the case was treated as an active, unfolding investigation from the start.
In the days that followed, the loss was publicly marked in memorial listings that placed Frazier among North Charleston’s victims of gun violence and noted that another person, Damoreion Tyshawn Smiley, was also killed in the same incident.
Nearly two years later, detectives announced an arrest. On August 15, 2025, the North Charleston Police Department reported that Kylil Smith was taken into custody as the suspect, accused of shooting three men inside an apartment on Leslie Street on August 25, 2023. Authorities said Smith was charged with two counts of murder, one count of attempted murder, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
As of the arrest announcement, police stated the investigation remained ongoing, signaling that investigators were still working through the circumstances behind what happened inside that apartment and the chain of events that ended in two deaths and one survivor’s injuries.
