In the small community of Ward, South Carolina, a tragedy unfolded on the evening of March 31, 2025, culminating in the death of 52-year-old Kimberly Waters Leon. Deputies from the Saluda County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to Darling Ingredients Inc., a local animal processing plant formerly known as Valley Proteins, around 5:45 p.m. following reports of a shooting.
Upon their arrival, they discovered the bodies of Leon and a man, later identified as 44-year-old Willie James Hopkins, Jr.
Investigations conducted by the Saluda County Coroner's Office, the Sheriff's Office, and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division soon pieced together the grim sequence of events. It was determined that the incident was a murder-suicide, stemming from a previous relationship between Leon and Hopkins. Autopsy results confirmed that Hopkins had shot Leon multiple times before turning the gun on himself. The authorities have assured the public that this was an isolated incident and that there is no further threat to the community.
Kimberly Nicole Leon, a native of Charleston, South Carolina, was remembered as a free spirit who worked as a truck driver. Friends and family recalled her love for the open road, wind chimes, and snow globes. She was particularly known for her enthusiastic celebration of Halloween, a holiday she adored and for which she always decorated extensively.
