In the early hours of June 3, 2016, in Ridgeland, South Carolina, 33-year-old Michelle Passio was found dead in her home. A mother of eight, her life was cut short by a fatal gunshot wound to the head. Her body was discovered on a couch in the living room of the East Main Street residence she shared with her husband, Richard 'Rock' Passio Jr. Chillingly, all eight of their children, who ranged in age from six weeks to 13 years, were present in the home at the time of their mother's death.
The initial call to 911 came from Richard Passio just before 6 a.m., reporting his wife was unresponsive after a series of gunshots. He initially claimed that after an argument about their marriage, Michelle had fired two shots into the air before turning the 9mm handgun on herself. However, investigators with the Ridgeland Police Department quickly became suspicious of his account. Evidence at the scene suggested Michelle had been deceased for some time before the call was made, as much of the blood had already coagulated. This, along with other evidence, pointed towards a homicide rather than a suicide.
Following a second interview with police, Richard Passio Jr., then 37, was arrested and charged with the murder of his wife. The investigation revealed a troubled marriage where Richard exerted significant control over Michelle's life, dictating her finances, friendships, and movements. It came to light that Michelle was unhappy and had consulted an attorney with the intention of seeking a divorce. Witnesses testified that her husband refused to allow her to have friends or go places without his permission. Prosecutors argued that he killed her because he could not control her dissatisfaction with their marriage.
In August 2018, a Jasper County jury found Richard 'Rock' Passio Jr. guilty of the murder of his wife. He was subsequently sentenced to 30 years in prison for the crime. The tragic case highlighted the devastating impact of domestic violence, leaving eight children without their mother.
