On a Thursday afternoon in June, the tranquility of Salzburg Landing in Ridgeland, South Carolina, was shattered by the sound of gunfire. When the chaos subsided, 46-year-old Lakicia Ann Young, a Black female, lay dead, the victim of a fatal shooting on June 11, 2015. The events of that day unfolded into a tragic story of domestic violence that ended a life and led to the arrest of her husband.
Lakicia was at the landing with a male companion when her husband, 45-year-old Tyrone Young,
arrived at the scene. In a sudden burst of violence, Tyrone allegedly shot his wife. He then reportedly turned his weapon on her companion, who managed to escape. After the shooting, Tyrone fled into the nearby woods and marshland, prompting a response from the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.
For approximately 40 minutes, law enforcement officers worked to locate and apprehend Tyrone Young. After a tense period, he was taken into custody. He was subsequently charged with murder, attempted murder, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Following his arrest, he was held at the Jasper County Detention Center without bond, leaving the community to grapple with the sudden and tragic loss of a beloved member.
Lakicia, affectionately known as 'Kicia,' was remembered as a vibrant and loving person. Born in Brooklyn, New York, she had moved to South Carolina with her family in her youth. She was a mother and a cherished friend to many, known for her love of music, dancing, and, most of all, her family. Her unexpected death left a void in the hearts of those who knew and loved her, a stark reminder of the devastating impact of domestic violence.
