In the winter of 2021, a young Black woman named Shanice Williams had her life cut short in a tragic act of violence. At just 22 years old, Shanice was a mother and a certified nursing assistant at the Oakhaven Nursing Center in Darlington, South Carolina.
On the afternoon of January 7, 2021, as Shanice was leaving her job, she was fatally shot in the nursing home's parking lot. The Darlington County Coroner later confirmed that her death was a homicide.
The incident was quickly determined to be domestic in nature.
The Darlington Police Department led the investigation into the shooting. In the days that followed, authorities identified a person of interest in the case: Shanice's ex-boyfriend. Law enforcement, including U.S. Marshals, located the man at a residence in neighboring Florence County. As deputies were arriving to make contact with him, the man took his own life. His name was not publicly released by officials. The State Law Enforcement Division was brought in to investigate the man's death.
Shanice was born on July 11, 1998, and had attended Lamar High School. She was remembered by her employer as a valued member of their team, with the Oakhaven Nursing Center releasing a statement expressing their deep sorrow over the devastating loss. Her obituary noted that she left behind a young daughter. Funeral services for Shanice were handled by the Bacote-Eaddy Funeral Home in Timmonsville.
