In the early morning hours of a cold Saturday in the Bronx, a dispute over something as trivial as a parking spot escalated into a fatal encounter for Trevor Hughes. The 49-year-old man was returning to his Fowler Avenue home near Morris Park Avenue on February 8, 2025, when he found a vehicle blocking his driveway. This seemingly minor inconvenience would tragically cost him his life.
Hughes, a father of four who worked as a locksmith, handyman, and a DJ known as DJ Dread, attempted to
resolve the situation peacefully. He reportedly contacted 311 and the local police precinct to have the car moved. However, the situation took a violent turn when he and his fiancée confronted the occupants of the vehicle. An argument broke out, and in the ensuing chaos, Hughes was shot in the abdomen. Emergency services rushed him to Jacobi Hospital, but his wound proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. His fiancée was also allegedly assaulted during the altercation.
The investigation into the senseless killing led to the swift arrest of Lavar Davis, 46, and Fallon Wise, 41. Davis was charged with second-degree murder for the shooting of Hughes. Wise was charged with assault and harassment in connection with the attack on Hughes' fiancée. The tragic irony of the situation was amplified by the revelation of Davis's past. He was on lifetime parole after serving over two decades in prison for a 1997 murder conviction.
The community was left to mourn the loss of a man described as a cornerstone of his community, who used his music to bring joy to others.
