Early in the morning on February 25, 2025, a violent incident occurred in the Northeast area of Kansas City, Missouri, claiming the life of a young man. Officers from the Kansas City Police Department were dispatched around 2:00 a.m. to the 3700 block of St. John Avenue in the Scarritt Point neighborhood following reports of gunfire. Upon their arrival, law enforcement personnel were unable to locate a victim at the scene, but bystanders in the area informed them that an individual had already
been transported to a hospital by a private vehicle.
The victim was identified as Diego Lopez-Hernandez, an 18-year-old Hispanic male. Medical staff at the hospital attended to him as he suffered from multiple gunshot wounds, but despite their efforts, he succumbed to his injuries. Detectives were notified shortly after 6:00 a.m. that he had been pronounced deceased. Further investigation by police revealed that the shooting had likely taken place at a nearby location, specifically near the intersection of Sunrise Drive and Cliff Drive Place, rather than the initial address where officers were called.
Homicide detectives took over the case to determine the events leading up to the fatal shooting. At the time of the initial investigation, authorities stated that no subject of interest had been identified and no one was in custody. Police urged the public to come forward with any information that could assist in resolving the case, offering a reward for tips submitted anonymously, as the community grappled with the violent loss of the teenager.
