In the early morning hours of December 27, 2024, the life of 29-year-old Harvey D. Jones Jr., a Black/African American male from Temple Hills, was tragically cut short. At approximately 12:30 a.m., officers from the Prince George's County Police Department responded to a report of a shooting in the 6100 block of Oxon Hill Road. Upon arrival, they discovered Jones outside, suffering from gunshot wounds.
He was quickly transported to a local hospital, but his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
The initial investigation into the homicide began immediately, with detectives working to piece together the events that led to the fatal encounter. Authorities offered a substantial reward of up to $25,000 for any information that would lead to an arrest and indictment in the case, signaling their commitment to bringing the person or persons responsible to justice. The preliminary stages of the investigation focused on determining a motive and identifying any potential suspects.
A significant breakthrough in the case came about a month later. On January 29, 2025, the Prince George's County Police Department announced the arrest of a 17-year-old male from Temple Hills. With the assistance of the Calvert County Sheriff's Office, the department's Fugitive Unit apprehended the teenager in Calvert County. The suspect, whose name was not released due to his age, is being charged as an adult with first and second-degree murder, as well as other related charges. He is currently being held at the Department of Corrections without bond. Investigators believe the shooting stemmed from a dispute, though they have not found any evidence to suggest that the suspect and Harvey D. Jones Jr. knew each other prior to the incident.
