At approximately 3:29 p.m. in the 2400 block of the street, Deangelo West, a 27-year-old Black male, was shot in the back of the head. First responders rushed him to a local hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.
For three days, he clung to life, but on December 29, 2024, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting moved swiftly, and on January 1, 2025, detectives from the Baltimore Police Department arrested 28-year-old Maurice Prioleau at a residence in the 2600 block of Tyler Street. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder in connection with West's death. While the motive for the shooting remained a point of difficulty for prosecutors, some accounts suggested it may have been a tragic case of mistaken identity. The loss was particularly devastating for West's family, as his sister revealed he had recently found out he was going to be a father and had moved in with her to help with her three children.
The legal proceedings that followed brought a measure of justice, though not without heartache for Deangelo West's loved ones. On December 9, 2025, Maurice Prioleau, then 29, accepted a plea agreement. He entered an Alford plea, a legal maneuver in which a defendant does not admit guilt but acknowledges that the prosecution has enough evidence for a conviction. In a courtroom filled with emotion, where West's family expressed their profound grief and criticized what they felt was a lenient sentence, a Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge sentenced Prioleau to a term of life in prison, with all but 30 years suspended. West's adoptive mother and sister delivered powerful impact statements, remembering a man who would have turned 28 that November and lamenting that his unborn child would never know their father.
