In the late afternoon of January 20, 2025, a burst of gunfire shattered the ordinary atmosphere of a McDonald's parking lot in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. When police responded to the scene at the intersection of Airline Highway and Prescott Road around 3:53 p.m., they discovered 22-year-old D'Shawn Marcelle Brown, an African American male, deceased from multiple gunshot wounds near his vehicle. The tragic event was made all the more poignant as Brown was the grandson of State Representative C.
Denise Marcelle, a prominent local figure and a vocal advocate against gun violence. Just an hour before his death, Brown had been with his grandmother, who had persuaded him to stay with her that evening due to an impending snowstorm. He had stopped at the McDonald's on his way back to her house, a trip he would never complete.
The Baton Rouge Police Department's homicide detectives immediately launched an investigation that would lead to a series of arrests over the following weeks. On January 31, authorities apprehended their first suspect, 33-year-old Melvin Robinson Jr. According to arrest documents, Robinson, accompanied by two other individuals, drove a maroon SUV to the McDonald's, approached the car Brown was sitting in, and shot him multiple times. A witness identified Robinson as the driver and the gunman. Investigators allege that the day after the shooting, Robinson set fire to the vehicle used in the crime near his apartment. When questioned, he gave conflicting accounts of his whereabouts and the ownership of the car before eventually admitting to burning the SUV.
The investigation continued to unfold with the arrest of a second suspect, 19-year-old Brandon Grayham Jr., on February 5. A few days later, on February 10, a third person, 19-year-old Johnathan Williams, was taken into custody in connection with Brown's murder. Williams was also wanted on a prior warrant in New Orleans for principal to second-degree murder. All three men were charged with second-degree murder and illegal use of a weapon for their alleged roles in the fatal shooting. Robinson faced additional charges of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and obstruction of justice. While the arrests brought a measure of relief to Brown's grieving family, the community was left to mourn the loss of another young life to gun violence, a cause his own grandmother had long championed.
