On a Friday evening, May 5, 2023, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, 33-year-old Juandell Miller was fatally shot at a gas station. The incident occurred around 9:45 p.m. at the Circle K located at the corner of Burbank Drive and Bluebonnet Boulevard. Miller was near the gas pumps, working on his car, when the tragic event unfolded.
Authorities believe the shooting was a targeted attack. A hooded individual, carrying a red plastic bag, approached Miller.
The assailant then removed a rifle from the bag and shot Miller multiple times before fleeing the scene. Miller succumbed to his injuries at the gas station. Surveillance footage captured the gunman running to a car parked behind the gas station and getting into the passenger seat.
The investigation into Miller's death led to the arrest of 31-year-old Kenneth McKenzie. A crucial piece of evidence linking McKenzie to the crime was DNA recovered from shell casings found at the scene, which matched his profile in a state police database. Investigators were able to track the getaway car after a license plate reader flagged it in the Gardere area. The owner of the vehicle informed deputies that McKenzie and another unidentified man had borrowed the car on the night of the shooting. McKenzie was subsequently booked on a charge of second-degree murder. At the time of the initial reports, there were no other suspects publicly identified.
