In the late evening of Thursday, May 1, 2025, a burst of violence shattered the bustling atmosphere outside the Silver Legacy casino in downtown Reno, Nevada. When police responded to the scene at West 4th and North Sierra streets just before 8 p.m., they discovered the body of Oscar Henderson, a 34-year-old Black/African American man from the nearby city of Sparks.
An autopsy performed by the Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner's Office would later confirm that Henderson's death was a homicide caused by a gunshot wound to the torso.
The sudden and tragic end to Oscar Henderson's life left his family reeling in profound sorrow. Described as a beloved brother, son, uncle, and father, his absence created a void filled with grief as his loved ones struggled to comprehend a world without his light, love, and laughter. In the wake of his passing, his family reached out to the community for support to give him the farewell he deserved, remembering the vibrant life that was cut short.
The investigation into the shooting moved swiftly. The day after the incident, authorities located and arrested a suspect near Santa Cruz, California. Due to the suspect's age, their identity was not publicly released by the Reno Police Department. The arrest brought a small measure of relief to a community shaken by the brazen act of violence, as the legal process began to seek justice for Oscar Henderson and his grieving family. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting is ongoing.
