On the morning of May 9, 2025, a violent series of events unfolded in the Academy neighborhood of Saint Louis, Missouri, leaving a community shaken and multiple families grieving. Officers from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department were dispatched to the 5100 block of Wells Avenue shortly after 4:00 a.m. following a ShotSpotter activation that alerted them to gunfire in the area.
Upon arrival at the residence, first responders discovered the body of 57-year-old male Tyrone Mason lying on the front porch. He had sustained fatal gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene before investigators could fully assess the situation inside the home.
As detectives and officers secured the perimeter to await a search warrant, the situation escalated into a standoff. Approximately three hours later, a man emerged from the residence and briefly spoke with law enforcement personnel before retreating back inside. Moments later, the individual—identified as 61-year-old James Carter—exited the home a second time, now armed with a rifle. Carter opened fire on the officers and a federal ATF agent stationed outside. Law enforcement returned fire, striking Carter, who then retreated into the house. A SWAT team was subsequently called to the scene to enter the building.
Upon entering the residence, the tactical team found Carter deceased near the front doorway, having died from injuries sustained during the exchange of gunfire. Further establishing the magnitude of the tragedy, investigators conducting a sweep of the property discovered two additional homicide victims inside. Ariel Eastling, a 34-year-old woman, was found dead in the living room, and 58-year-old James Rodriguez, a handyman known in the area as 'Mr. FixIt,' was located deceased in the basement.
Authorities determined that James Carter was the sole suspect responsible for the deaths of Mason, Eastling, and Rodriguez. Carter, a convicted felon, had killed the three victims prior to the arrival of the police or during the initial timeframe of the incident. Because the suspect died during the confrontation with police, no arrests were made, and the case was cleared by the death of the offender. The motive for the triple homicide remained under investigation as detectives worked to piece together the relationship between the victims and the gunman.
