In the parking lot of the Reserve at White Oak Apartments in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, a young man's life was cut short over a firearm. On April 30, 25-year-old David Turley III, known to his loved ones as 'Trey,' was fatally shot. He was rushed to a hospital in critical condition but ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The male victim did not reside at the apartment complex but was visiting someone he knew there.
His family described him as a beacon of positivity who worked hard, loved life, and had a bright, happy personality that could light up any room. He leaves behind nine siblings.
The events that led to his death began when three individuals approached him and a companion in the parking lot. The trio expressed interest in swapping guns with Turley. When he refused the offer, the encounter turned violent. One of the men grabbed him and shot him before stealing his Tan Digger 9mm handgun. Investigators found approximately five spent. 45 caliber shell casings at the scene. In the aftermath, Turley was not only missing his registered firearm but also the shoes he had been wearing.
Following an investigation by East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's detectives, five suspects were arrested in connection with the robbery and homicide. Three of the individuals, Jayshon Smith, Marlon Ross, and Amorian Floyd, were charged with first-degree murder and armed robbery. They are accused of being the three who initially approached Turley. According to law enforcement, after the shooting, the trio fled to the home of Amorian Floyd's brothers, Antonio and Anthony Floyd.
The Floyd brothers, Antonio and Anthony, were subsequently arrested and charged as accessories after the fact to first-degree murder and armed robbery. They allegedly assisted the other three suspects by helping them change out of their clothes and arranging a getaway car. At the time of their arrests for the murder, Jayshon Smith and Amorian, Antonio, and Anthony Floyd were already incarcerated at the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on unrelated charges. Marlon Ross was taken into custody by a SWAT team at his residence. The arrests brought a measure of hope for justice to a family grieving a senseless loss.
