In the waning hours of a Saturday night in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the festive spirit of New Year's Eve was shattered by an act of violence that claimed the life of 25-year-old Kenneth Franklin Jr. On December 30, 2017, Franklin, a Black male, was fatally shot in an incident that also resulted in the death of 22-year-old Larry Williams. The double homicide was part of a string of violence that cast a dark shadow over the city as the year drew to a close.
