Ponciano Tule Bernal, a 48-year-old man from Oakland, California, was fatally shot on December 26, 2024. Known as "Chano" to his loved ones, he was a devoted father of six and a passionate soccer enthusiast. The incident occurred when his 14-year-old son was robbed of his electric scooter by three individuals near 11th Avenue and Foothill Boulevard. After learning of the robbery, Bernal went out to search for the suspects. He eventually found them, but they followed him back to his home.
When he stepped out of his car to confront the group, gunfire erupted, and he was shot in the heart in front of his son and brother.
Authorities later arrested a 15-year-old boy in connection with Bernal’s death. Prosecutors filed charges against the juvenile, though his name was not released due to his age. The Oakland Police Department continues to seek additional information, videos, or photos that could assist in the investigation.
