In the small town of South Berwick, Maine, a domestic dispute shattered the evening quiet and ended in the tragic death of Sherri Sweet, a 37-year-old Caucasian female. On the night of March 22, 2025, police received a distressing 911 call from 48 Brattle Street. The caller was Jeremiah Godfrey, 43, who reported that he and his girlfriend, Sherri Sweet, had been involved in an argument that escalated with shots being fired.
Godfrey informed the dispatcher that a struggle over a gun had
resulted in Sweet sustaining a gunshot wound, leaving her unresponsive. First responders rushed to the scene to render aid. Sweet was quickly transported to Portsmouth Regional Hospital for emergency medical treatment. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, she was pronounced deceased the following day, on March 23, 2025, at 10:15 p.m. When officers arrived at the residence, they discovered a small child on the living room couch and made arrangements for a family member to take custody of them.
The Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit was called in to assist the South Berwick Police Department with the investigation. An autopsy was conducted by the New Hampshire Medical Examiner's Office, which determined that the cause of Sweet's death was a gunshot wound to the head and ruled the manner of death a homicide. Following the investigation and autopsy results, an arrest warrant for murder was obtained for Jeremiah Godfrey.
On March 26, 2025, Jeremiah Godfrey was arrested in South Berwick and subsequently transported to the York County Jail. According to court documents, Godfrey claimed the shooting was a "bad mishap" that occurred during their dispute. He alleged that the gun discharged as Sweet tried to grab it from him while she was walking down the stairs in front of him. However, the autopsy revealed the gunshot wound was to the back of her head. Godfrey has been charged with murder and is being held without bail.
